4 Reasons to Go On a Mission Trip

Thinking about going on a short-term mission trip? You’re not alone. According to Relevant Magazine, more than 1.5 million Americans go on mission trips each year. Here are four reasons why you should go on a mission trip:

  • Build faith — The mission field allows us to see other people’s commitment and love of Jesus very clearly. Many have dedicated their lives to the lost and poor. Experiencing a first-hand account of their faith is invaluable to building your own. “We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

  • Build perspective — Whether you realize it or not, we have a very limited perspective. A mission trip stretches our comfort level, expands and challenges our Western understanding. “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” 1 Corinthians 9:22

  • Build gratitude — There’s nothing more convicting than to see individuals who have less material possessions than you live a happier and wholehearted life! “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 3:8

  • Build family — The friends we develop during these trips may go on to become some of our closest relationships. “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” Proverbs 17:17

Regardless of what you decide, one truth remains: we are the light of the world. Whether you are a light in your own community or abroad, the Lord commands us to let our “. . . light shine before men, that they may see [our] good deeds and praise [our] Father in heaven” Matthew 5:16.
